Application of Mobile Energy Storage for Enhancing Power
These aspects are discussed, along with a discussion on the cost–benefit analysis of mobile energy resources. The paper concludes by presenting research gaps, associated challenges,
As mobile energy storage is often coupled with mobile emergency generators or electric buses, those technologies are also considered in the review. Allocation of these resources for power grid resilience enhancement requires modeling of both the transportation system constraints and the power grid operational constraints.
In 2016, Consolidated Edison of New York announced their plans to develop an 800 kWh MESS unit with Electrovaya, a lithium-ion battery company . Power Edison has deployed mobile energy storage systems for over five years, offering utility-scale plug-and-play solutions .
Referred to as transportable energy storage systems, MESSs are generally vehicle-mounted container battery systems equipped with standard-ized physical interfaces to allow for plug-and-play operation. Their transportation could be powered by a diesel engine or the energy from the batteries themselves.
Although MESSs are believed to enhance power grid resilience, the current literature lacks a unified approach to evaluate the effectiveness of their proposed strategies to achieve this goal. It is not enough to state that a measure will enhance resilience, a qualitative analysis is necessary.
