Vodafone Ukraine Transitions to Optical Networks for 5G and 6G
Vodafone has started connecting mobile base stations via passive optical networks xPON (1/10 Gigabit/s Passive Optical Network), which will enable a quick transition to 5G
In particular, Huawei Ukraine will conduct tests of International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) radio technology with the 5G base standard in Kropyvnytskyi and Ivano-Frankivsk. During the tests, the company plans to use Huawei-branded DBS5900 model test base stations with RRU5818 model remote radio units.
While many operators across Europe have focused on launching 5G networks, the same can't be said for Ukraine. Speaking to DCD, Stanislav Prybytko, director general of the directorate for mobile broadband for Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation, explains that the war with Russia has stalled the country's 5G goals.
On November 1, 2024, Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov announced that the Cabinet of Ministers had adopted amendments to the resolution on radio frequency use, enabling the implementation of 5G in Ukraine. Lviv was the first city to test the 5G network in Ukraine.
Nokia Solutions and Networks Ukraine will conduct testing of 5G NR technology in Vynnyky, Lviv region. The radio equipment will be integrated into Huawei's PS Core commercial infrastructure. Each company is obliged to submit an official report on the test results within one month after completion.
